One of the biggest downsides of using Facebook Messenger is the absence of the Logout button. For whatever reason, Facebook has decided to completely remove the Logout button and make Messenger a standalone app. This, of course, irritated a number of avid Messenger users since they can’t logout from Messenger.
Fortunately, you don’t have to deal with this issue anymore. There are a few tricks you can follow to logout from Messenger without necessarily deleting the app. In this blog post, I’m going to teach you how you can logout from Messenger quickly and easily.
Keep in mind, if you were unexpectedly logged out from Messenger, it could possibly mean someone used brute force attack to hack your account.
How to Logout from Messenger on Android
The best part about using an Android device is that it is a lot easier to logout from Messenger compared to an iOS device. Using this method, it’s not even necessary to access Facebook’s official app or Messenger since you can just do it from the Settings.
1st Step: Go to Your Phone’s Settings
To start, you need to go to your phone’s settings. This can be easily recognized by the gear icon which can be found on your phone’s app drawer. Once you have located the Settings, press the icon and proceed to step number 2.
2nd Step: Go to Apps
After choosing Settings, a new window will open which will display the various options available in your phone’s Settings. What you need to do is look for the Apps option. This is where you’re going to look for the App Settings for Messenger. The Apps option is normally located under the Device section which is right after the Wireless & Networks section.
Once you have found the Apps option, press it and proceed to step number 3.
3rd Step: Search for Messenger
Under the Apps option, you will see a list of all applications you have on your mobile phone. If you have a lot of installed applications, it might take you a while to look for the Messenger app. Some Android devices have the option to choose to display between Downloaded, Running, Disabled, and All applications.
In most cases, you can find Messenger under the Downloaded section. However, that’s only if you installed it through the Google Play Store. Meanwhile, if you’ve installed your Messenger through an apk file, you will need to look for it under the All section. Once you’ve located Messenger, follow step number 4.
4th Step: Open Messenger and Choose Storage
Here, you can find options such as Uninstall and Force Stop. Just disregard them; what you need is the Storage option. In Android 6.0, there’s a Storage Option which provides data regarding the total memory used by a particular app. These include the app’s original size and data accumulated through regular use. Once you’re in the Storage option, go to step number 5.
5th Step: Delete App Data
By choosing the Clear Data option, you’re basically deleting all data the app has accumulated permanently. This means any files, accounts, settings, databases, and cookies associated with the app will all be gone for good. However, this is the only means you have to logout from Messenger.
Once you press Ok, all data will be cleared. You’ll also notice that the overall storage data for Messenger will significantly lower. This is the final step to logout successfully from Messenger. Keep in mind that since you’ve deleted all associated data, you will need to follow the basic login step once again.
Moreover, any other accounts that were able to log in to your Messenger before will also be deleted. Now, proceed to your Messenger and check if everything was successful. If you were able to follow the steps successfully, you will be able to see this:
Keep in mind, however, that even though you have deleted all data associated with Messenger, you will still see the option saying “Continue as [Your Name]” if you are currently logged in your Facebook official app.
To log in, simply press that button as wait until you have successfully logged back into your Messenger account.
A Shorter and Quicker Alternative
There’s actually an even quicker and shorter alternative to logout your account from Messenger. To start, simply follow these steps:
- Press and hold Facebook’s messenger icon on your phone’s app drawer or home screen. Doing so will cause two options to appear: Uninstall and App Info.
- Simply drag the icon towards the App Info option. This will open up the settings for your Messenger app. You can then head straight to the Storage menu and press “Clear Data” as you did with step #5.
Finally, you are now logged out of your Facebook messenger account. Then again, if you are currently logged in to your Facebook official app, you can just log into your Messenger again with a single tap.
However, if you don’t have Facebook’s official app on your device, or you have chosen to log out earlier, you will be prompted to provide your credentials (i.e. username and password).
Facebook’s decision to remove the Logout option is definitely annoying. However, it’s not something that can’t be solved. By simply following the steps mentioned above, logging out is definitely quick and easy.
